Itinery
Tombouctou with its winding streets and its history has always attracted the African and European races. In the surrounding desert live the Touareg founders of the town and the Maures who founded Azalai de Taoudenie at the edge of the Niger.
Day 1: Depart for Meharie in a northerly direction towards Agouni, first night on the dunes under the full magic of the desert sky!
Day 2: Starting at 08.00 h, we continue the route to arrive at Agouni around 13.00 h where we stop for lunch. Les Hommes Bleus (the Touareg) and their families are extremely hospitable - don't be afraid to ask them questions. Night stopover at Agouni.
Day 3: Start at 08.00 h to arrive at an oasis where the Azalai (the camel train which transports the rock salt from Taoudenit to Tombouctou) frequently visits. Picnic lunch, excursion in the vicinity and then night at the oasis.
Days 4 and 5: A long voyage! Depart for Triken in the northwest, a Touareg camp in the heart of the desert. This place is a real cross-roads for the camel trains. Well before Triken, we pass the first night in a caravan camp.
Day 6: Start out for Techack, always travelling across the full expanse of the desert, picnic at midday with our night encampment on a dune!.
Day 7: Return to Tombouctou, picnic lunch getting back to Tombouctou in the afternoon.
